The big day.

Controversial as it may be within the Conservative Party, I will be backing Obama today. Needless to say, I feel he is the best candidate, and I hope for the sake of the world that America feels the same way.

Glasgow East by-election

It's looking very, very likely that Labour have lost their third safest seat in Scotland to the SNP in the Glasgow East by-election. Obviously a hugely significant loss - I'd hate to be Gordon Brown right now!

UPDATE (1:29AM): According to the BBC, it would appear there will be a Labour requested re-count. Desperate times call for desperate measures...

UPDATE NUMBER TWO (2:25AM): It's official - the SNP have taken the seat! Labour vote cut from 18,775 to 10,912, leaving the SNP with a majority of 365 votes. Also, a very respectable third place for our candidate, Davena Rankin, and a lost deposit for the Lib Dems.

Cameron's vision of a broken society

There is a danger of becoming quite literally a demoralised society, where nobody will tell the truth any more about what is good and bad, right and wrong. That is why children are growing up without boundaries, thinking they can do as they please, and why no adult will intervene to stop them – including, often, their parents. If we are going to get anywhere near solving some of these problems, this has to stop.”
David Cameron MP

I have often said that our “Are you thinking what we’re thinking?” campaign would have been far more successful had we simply reversed the statement. Whilst people often agreed with the posters, nobody wanted to actually admit to thinking like a Tory! However, had our slogan been “We’re thinking what you’re thinking”, I believe that it would have been better received. People would have felt that our party was already in tune with their views – that we were speaking to them, rather than asking them to answer us.

Well, David Cameron has managed to inspire exactly that feeling in the public; his speech in Glasgow East last week marked a milestone for both party and leader. No longer are the Conservatives afraid of saying what needs to be said, of addressing fundamental truths about today’s Britain for fear of being labelled the ‘nasty party’. If anything, Cameron’s speech made Labour, with their early prison releases and daily stabbings, look like the ‘not nasty enough’ party.

After reading comments about the speech such as this,

Does this mean I'm Conservative now? For the first time in my 28 years on this planet - a politician has broken through my hitherto impervious political apathy and addressed my deepest concerns about where the UK is going and the pathetic examples we are teaching our children! Hooray!!”
Abigail Harding (taken from the TimesOnline site)

it is clear that the Conservatives are speaking to the electorate in a way we have not done in a very long time. Cameron cut through the political promises and newspeak and spoke, not as a politician, but merely as a citizen, worried about where our society is headed.

When I first heard this speech, I hoped that one day, we would look back and remember it as the turning point, as the moment Britain woke up. With the Conservatives in power, I’m confident it will be.

Leafleting in Loughborough

David Cameron will be in Loughborough next week for a public meeting, and so this weekend (19th/20th July) there will be a leaflet drop to advertise his visit. If you are interested in helping out, please contact James Poland (jmpolandATaol.com) for more details!
